Mistakes to avoid after a slip and fall

On Behalf of | Apr 18, 2022 | Personal Injury |

When you hear about slip-and-fall accidents, you may believe they aren’t that big of a deal. However, the truth is that they can cause serious injuries and long-term pain.

Something else you may not realize is that slip-and-fall accidents are more common than you realize. They can occur almost anywhere, from the sidewalk outside your apartment, the grocery store or somewhere else.

Because many people don’t think these accidents are serious, mistakes may be made. Unfortunately, if you try to file a lawsuit down the road, these mistakes may cost you. The best way to avoid the common mistakes made after a slip and fall accident is to know what they are:

Not going to the doctor right away

After an accident on someone else’s property, it’s good to go to the doctor or an emergency room. Even if you don’t think the injury is serious, medical treatment is recommended. If you don’t get medical care, the insurance company for the other party may claim you weren’t injured or that your injury isn’t as severe as you said it was.

Not filing a lawsuit fast enough

If you are injured because of a slip-and-fall accident, you have just two years from the accident date to file a claim. If you don’t file your claim within this time period, you lose your right to do so.

Handling your slip-and-fall claim alone

If you are involved in a slip-and-fall accident, you must take the right steps and avoid the mistakes above to protect your rights. You may be able to recover compensation for your injuries and damages if you can prove negligence and prove your losses, but it’s usually best to have experienced legal guidance throughout the process.
