What to do after a car accident

Getting into a car accident in Georgia can be a traumatic experience, even if it’s only a minor fender-bender. If you’ve never thought about what you should do after a car accident, you might panic and make a mistake. Here are some important things to remember if you ever get involved in an auto accident:

Remain at the scene and contact the police

The most important thing to do after a car accident is to make sure that everyone involved is OK and call 911. Even if no one needs medical attention, you must remain at the scene until police arrive. Leaving the scene of an accident is a serious crime.

Documents everything and get information

Police do not always respond to motor vehicle accidents in a timely manner. If you are able to, you should record as many of the details from the accident scene as you can. Videos and photos of the vehicles and their positions on the roadway may be valuable evidence that you will need later on.

While you should never share too many personal details with the other people who were involved in the accident, you should exchange contact information and insurance policy numbers. Also make sure to get vehicle information like make, model, and license number from each car.

Do not discuss fault

The other people involved in the accident may start talking about who was at fault. You should avoid arguing or even discussing fault at the accident scene. After a car crash, people may have a mix of shock and confusion that can cause them to overreact. Stay calm and don’t get involved.

Talk to a lawyer

After you are involved in a car accident, a lawyer may be able to help you look at the evidence to determine who was at fault. If another party caused the accident through reckless driving, you may be able to sue them for financial compensation.
